Here is a list of useful features hiding in your reliable search engine, Google.
- Ever wanted to convert something, but not known the table?
- Try Googling it by entering (e.g.) :
100mph to khm
You will be presented with the answer you needed, and in record time. This is applicable for all forms of conversion, e.g. 100 fahrenheit to celcius ; 100 celcius to fahrenheit ; Just replace the values with what you need to convert
- Let Google be your spell check! Just enter the word you are not certain of spelling into the Google search box, spelling mistakes and all, and Google will “suggest” the correct word.
- For residents of the USA Google allows searching of telephone and address listings. Just enter the name, city and state of the person you are searching for. If a phone number matches your search it will be at the top of the search listing along with a map link to the address.
- Use Google Groups! Google groups has an index of millions of messages and discussions archived from the Usenet. You can find Google Groups at: http://groups.google.com
- Froogle is yet another useful feature provided by Google. Froogle, accessed at http://froogle.google.com is a search engine for online stores and/or products.
- Google Catalogs, http://catalogs.google.com is a searchable index of paper catalogs provided by Google.
- Google allows you to search filetypes. To search for a specific type of file just use the following in your search string: “Filetype: [filetype]” Just enter filetype: followed by the extension you require.
- Google by default searches for your request anywhere in a website, but you can specify where it must search. To do this simply use any one of the operators, exactly as you would have used filetype, e.g. “inurl:” “intitle:” “intext:” “inanchor”
- Google can define many terms. Looking for the definition of a word, simply enter: “define:” and then your query. Easy when you know how!
- Now for something a little different to your standard search. Google Voice Search, http://labs1.google.com/gvs.html, you can dial the Voice Search phone number, speak the required keywords, and then click on the link. Every time you say a new search term, the results page will be refreshed with your request (JavaScript is to required to be enabled). Remember, this service is still experimental, so 100% success is not guaranteed.
- Are you one to keep tabs on the news? Google can assist with this as well. Google News Alerts, http://www.google.com/newsalerts monitors up to 50 queries per email address and will email you updates and stories on any news searched and requested.
- Google Alerts: http://www.googlealert.com will email you alerts on anything new indexed by Google.
- Gmail. Use it! Why not? Google Mail is in my personal experience one of the best floating based email address hosts available today. Check it out at: http://www.gmail.com
